The Thirty-third International Pyrotechnics Seminar will be held at the Fort Collins Marriott Hotel in Fort Collins, Colorado, Sunday through Friday, July 16 - 21, 2006. Fort Collins is located about 60 minutes from the Denver International Airport. Click a link to download the form in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word format.), including the fee schedule and a hotel reservation form (for the seminar and workshop). As updated information on the Seminar becomes available, it will be available at this website.

SYMPOSIUM TOPICS*

Pyrotechnics, in the International Pyrotechnics Society context, includes all energetic materials. Subjects of interest for this seminar include all aspects of pyrotechnics, (American definition) and to a lesser degree, explosives and propellants. Research aspects are emphasized for the latter two.

Contributed oral and poster sessions are planned in the following areas of interest:

• All aspects of Pyrotechnics
• Improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
• Manufacturing processes; twin-screw extruders,
  coacervation, co-precipitation, etc.
• Fuel/oxidizer formulations
• Nano-particles in energetic materials
• Insensitive pyrotechnics
• Synthesis and composition of explosives and other energetic composites
• Heterogeneous combustion
• Thermal decomposition
• Initiators and initiation, deflagration, and detonation
• Sensitivity and safety
• Testing methods and devices
• Environmental considerations
• Regulations and standards applicable to energetics; STANAGs, etc.
• Computational methods applied to energetic materials
• Unusual applications of energetic materials

* Traditionally, this event has been called a “Seminar” and we will continue to do so for historical reasons. However, the recent composition of the presentations and manuscripts in these Seminars, by definition, qualify this event to more properly be called a “Symposium”.

THIRD WORKSHOP ON PYROTECHNIC COMBUSTION MECHANICS

The 3rd Workshop on Pyrotechnic Combustion Mechanisms  will meet at the same hotel (on Saturday, July 15th) just before the 33rd IPS Seminar. There will be a separate registration and fee for the Workshop. The same Hotel Registration form applies to both the Seminar and the Workshop. This workshop is dedicated to the combustion of pyrotechnic materials. Whereas our present knowledge on the combustion of all kinds of solid propellants may be considered mature, our understanding of the combustion processes occurring with pyrotechnics is still in its infancy. Thus development of pyrotechnics for various applications, be it illuminating and decoy flares, igniter materials, smoke charges and the like, still requires time consuming procedures resembling more a trial and error system than a straightforward in other words deductive manner.

It is the aim of this workshop to create a platform for scientists to allow for detailed exchange of information and critical discussion on the physical and chemical aspects of the combustion of pyrotechnic materials.

AUTHOR INFORMATION

ABSTRACTS

Abstracts must be unclassified and, if a government has sponsored the work, must be cleared for submission by the sponsoring government. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words in length. You may indicate your preference for presentation in oral or poster session.  Full manuscripts from both types of presentations without distinction will be included in the proceedings. Commercial vendors must register and are encouraged to present posters.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

To be considered, abstracts may be submitted for inclusion in the Seminar at any time up to January 18, 2006.  Receipt of your abstract will be acknowledged by email or airmail. Authors are requested to follow the guidelines for preparation of the manuscript for publication (Click here to view the guidance.). Selection of the papers to be given at the Seminar will be made in February, 2006; and a list of papers for oral and poster presentation will be posted on this website in Feburary 2006. It is our intent to publish the proceedings of the Seminar in book form and on CD. These will both be distributed at the Seminar.

It is expected that an author will present each oral or poster paper. It is our intent not to publish manuscripts of papers, one of whose authors do not participate in the Seminar. This standard is set to encourage attendance and participation in the Seminar and to encourage the open exchange of ideas. Abstracts for poster session papers describing work in progress may be submitted at a later date. All papers will be presented and written in the English language. Furthermore, all submitted manuscripts must allow IPSUSA Inc. to copyright their submissions in accordance to standard practice for the publication of all technical and scientific publications.

FINAL FULL TEXT
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS

Final full text manuscripts must be received BEFORE APRIL 28, 2006 (January 18, 2006 for Frank Carver Bursary Award consideration). This is a firm date to permit inclusion in the printed Proceedings and CDs, which will be distributed at the Conference. Authors are requested to submit manuscripts in hardcopy and in electronic format (floppy disc, CD, or email). The email and postal address of the IPS 2006 Coordinator is given below. If possible, please use Microsoft Word (Version 6 or later) for preparing the electronic version.

All papers must be written in English. Please format the paper for printing on letter-sized (8.5 x 11 inches) paper, using 11 point Times New Roman font for the main text, with one inch margins on all sides, and portrait orientation. Preferably, do not include headers, footers, or page numbers, which will be added later in preparing the compilation of papers for the Proceedings. (Note: If fonts other than Times New Roman and Symbol are used, it will be helpful if the fonts are embedded in the document; for TrueType fonts with recent versions of Microsoft Word, font embedding can be found under “Tools/ Options/Save”). Please see the Guidelines for additional information. When submitting the abstract or manuscript, please provide the email and full mailing address of the author to be contacted with questions.

Fax: (303) 795-8159
email: lcrouse@ara.com

Seminar Registration: See the Registration Form (Click a link to download the form in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word format.) for registration fees. Note discounts for early registration and for IPS members. Early registrants using credit cards (VISA and MasterCard only) will not be charged until just before the Seminar. Also, please specify Seminar activities for companions and note participation in all events for both registrants and companions on the Registration form (Click a link to download the form in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word format.). Please complete all sections of the form.

Activities for Registrants and Companions included in the registration fee: The reception Sunday night, a mixer/picnic Monday night, Tuesday all-day tour for Companions of Seminar Registrants, and the traditional Wine and Cheese Social at closing Friday, are all included in the registration fee.

Companions' tour: This special Tuesday all day bus tour, “no-charge” to Companions of Seminar Registrants, will be a bus trip to the FlatIron Crossing mall just outside Boulder, Colorado. This is Colorado’s only indoor/outdoor shopping experience! It is home to Dillard’s, Foley’s, Nordstrom, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and over 200 exceptional shops, restaurants, and cafés. There will also be a side trip to the Dushanbe Teahouse in Boulder for Afternoon Tea (served on white linen with an assortment of pastries and sweets, scones with cream and lemon curd, tea sandwiches and a choice of three traditional blended teas). The Dushanbe Teahouse was built to celebrate the establishment of sister city ties with the city of Dushanbe. From 1987-1990, more than 40 artisans in several cities of Tajikistan created the decorative elements of the Teahouse, including its hand-carved and hand-painted ceiling, tables, stools, columns, and exterior ceramic panels.

Rocky Mountain National Park Optional tour: A Wednesday-afternoon optional tour is planned for all Registrants and Companions at an additional cost of $30.00 per person. There will be no technical sessions scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Take a 6-hour bus tour of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Enjoy a sack lunch on the coach as you travel up to the park and ride on Trail Ridge Road (one of America's most spectacular scenic drives) to the Alpine Visitors Center with scenic/photo stops en route. Soaring to an elevation of 12,183 feet, Trail Ridge Road seems to leave the earth behind. It slices through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, entering a world of rare alpine beauty. Distant peaks loom in all directions, while fragrant wildflowers blan- ket the tundra in mid-summer. Sharp-eyed observers can usually spy elk, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife traversing the meadows and crags. Higher than any paved through-road in the country, this cliff-hugging highway is as impressive for its engineering as for its stunning vistas. You can't find a road like this one anywhere outside of Colorado! (The bus will return to the hotel around 6 p.m.).

Fort Collins Country Club: On Thursday evening, the social event will be a trip by bus to the Fort Collins Country Club. The Fort Collins Country Club, founded in 1959, has established a tradition of fine dining and fun recreation for the entire family. The Club features a superb dining room with a varied menu with an emphasis on freshness and flavor. They offer a great place to meet friends for drinks and hors d'oeuvres before a relaxing dinner. This evening event is included in the registration fee for Seminar Registrants. Tickets for Companions of Seminar Registrants will be available at $30.00 each.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS

Return the hotel portion of the Registration Form (Click a link to download the form in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word format.) to Linda Crouse to receive the special Seminar rates. After we enter it into our database, this form will go to the hotel, and you will receive a confirmation number from Linda Crouse, the IPS 2006 Coordinator.

Be sure to specify which accommodation you prefer. The rates quoted are offered to registrants two days before and after the conference, based on space availability. A credit card number must be given as the first-night's deposit. However, there will be no charge to your credit card until departure. Once the hotel reservation has been made, all further transactions (cancellations, payments, etc.) with the hotel will be between the visitor and the hotel. Cancellations must be received 24 hours prior to scheduled arrival to avoid a no-show charge. The hotel policy on early departure is that you must confirm your departure date at check-in, and any subsequent changes to an earlier date will incur a $50 fee.
